Oak Creek Canyon in Sedona in Arizona

Although it is not a very common destination among Spaniards we travel to west coast of the United States, in Arizona we have the option of visit Sedona, an area that is the second most visited in the entire State, after the Grand Canyon of the Colorado.

Sedona It is a small holiday town, with houses of a certain charm, very crowded with tourists in the summer, which became popular since the 60s as a center of artisan and artistic activities.

But its great tourist attraction It's in Oak creek canyon, a narrow canyon in which the road runs along a river, between forests of lush pine trees.

On that tour you will see reddish rocky mountains in a way similar to the ones you find in the Grand Canyon.

The main difference is that in Sedona You will see this type of rocky mountain between the lush forests and not being part of large desert landscapes.

These Oak Creek Canyon's characteristic landscapes from the area of Sedona You will not be unknown at all, as they have been protagonists of numerous western films.

How to get to Sedona

Sedona you find it south of the historic Route 66, and specifically, of the city of Flagstaff. From this there are two routes to go down to Phoenix, Interstate 17 or the winding AZ89A road that will take you to Sedona.

Shortly after leaving the 170 and accessing the AZ89A, you will arrive at a viewpoint from which you can enjoy panoramic views of the lush forests of Oak Creek Canyon, towards which you will descend by the road.

With numerous curves, the road goes along the river and as you go, on top of the canyon, on both sides, you will see the rocky reddish mountains that make up this characteristic landscape.

At the end of the canyon, when the landscape opens, you will reach the small town of Sedona.

I made this route back after visiting the great desert landscapes of the Grand Canyon and the Monument Valley, in the direction of Phoenix to catch a flight to Washington.

While you appreciate the beauty of the contrast between the green color of the forests and the reddish color of the mountains that you find in Oak creek canyon, having been before in the impressive Grand Canyon, we were not so surprised by this last aspect.

Therefore, if you know the Sedona region, I recommend you plan the visit before the Grand Canyon. This way you will better appreciate the beauty of its film landscapes.
